And speaking of Coffee Day...
Did you know what we owe to the goats of Kaffa?
According to legend, back in the 9th century in the mountainous regions of Ethiopia, in the province of Kaffa, a young goat herd named Kaldi was grazing his herd on slopes covered in lush wild vegetation.
After a few days, he noticed a strange shift in his herd’s behavior. The goats were acting unusually lively. Instead of peacefully grazing on grass, they were jumping around, running, and bleating playfully for no apparent reason. Kaldi knew his goats well and recognized that this behavior went far beyond their usual playful nature. Intrigued and slightly concerned, he decided to closely watch what his goats were eating.
He quickly discovered that their favorite treat was bright red, glossy berries from an unfamiliar shrub. Curiosity won over caution. Kaldi picked a few berries and bit into their sweet pulp, swallowing the seeds. After all, if they didn’t harm his goats, they wouldn't harm him either!
Moments later, he felt a wave of warmth spread through his body, accompanied by a sudden surge of new energy! Excited, he decided to share his discovery with the monks at a nearby monastery. The abbot listened to his story with great interest, but when Kaldi mentioned the "extraordinary stimulation," the monk declared the berries a "temptation of the devil" and threw them straight into the roaring hearth.
It didn't take long before the entire room filled with the intoxicating, rich aroma of roasted coffee that we know so well today. The fragrance drifted throughout the monastery, sparking the curiosity of the other monks, who quickly came to see what was happening. Realizing his hasty reaction, the abbot ordered the seeds to be pulled from the embers and cooled down with water.
And that, according to legend, was how the very first cup of coffee in history was brewed. The monks who sampled the dark brew quickly noticed its invigorating effects. From that moment on, word of this extraordinary drink spread from monastery to monastery, and then further still — across the Red Sea to Yemen and throughout the entire Arabian Peninsula.
Is it just a legend, or is there a grain of coffee… (we mean truth!) in how coffee was first discovered? We might never know for sure, but if it is true, we’re certainly glad that Kaldi chose those exact slopes to graze his goats!
Thanks to them, we can enjoy wonderful coffee and the unique café atmosphere that comes with it. And if you’d like to discover more coffee stories, visit our Journal for more.
